The Lime Gallery looks forward to summer inspired by the landscape of the Yorkshire Dales and south Lakes fells with its latest exhibition – Summer Dales.

There is an expression here – “Dales time” – things will happen in our own good time, there is no call for hurry and rush. Our artists have captured its essence. The pace slows, the heat haze lingers, some nights it is never truly dark, and the hills and valleys, fields and woods, invite you to pause at the gatepost, gaze to the horizon, and escape from the urgency of the modern world.

We can do no better than quote Betjeman:

“…. as I woke up in the morning there was such scenery as doesn’t exist in the rest of England. Looking across at the great hillside with sheep on it, and down over the hills, and down below into the mist, I thought ‘I have come abroad, I have come back to what England was once like, this is a separate, secret, country….’ “

Sir John Betjeman, Speech Day, Giggleswick School, 1975

Visit us to enjoy Nigel Overton’s landscape paintings, Ross Brown’s stunning photography, Jane Rushton’s interpretations of topography and geology, and Tim Slatter’s dramatic etchings of Littondale and Ribblesdale. Alongside, we have Sue Ure ceramics and Amy Williams’ exquisite wildlife papercuts.

Summer Dales is a free exhibition which opens on Saturday 25 May and runs until 25 August 2013.

We can’t believe it ourselves but, this Saturday 18th May, marks 1 year since The Courtyard opened!

We are celebrating with a private party on Saturday evening for our loyal customers and ever supportive friends and are very proud that we have risen above the difficult economic climate to now have 6 successful businesses operating from The Courtyard with the final unit, The Brasserie Shop, due to open over the coming weeks.

We have watched Dalesbred‘s business grow so that they are now taking on more staff including offering an apprenticeship, The Brasserie is going from strength to strength and The Lime Gallery is having much success in featuring the work of celebrated local artists alongside up and coming national talent and are soon launching their on-line shop. Buon Vino is leading the way and supplying a strong local customer base alongside Michelin-starred restaurants throughout Yorkshire and the North West and has now introduced a loyalty points scheme (double points this anniversary weekend!) and Moons have developed their shop to showcase their amazing quality woollens to now major on stunning jackets. The final mention goes to Andy and Kathy at The Courtyard Dairy, our newest retailers and a brand new start-up business but already receiving national recognition in publications such as Yorkshire Life and The Guardian.

Fulfilling our brief of successful rural regeneration using local contractors, secure jobs for locals, supporting new and small businesses and seeing a range of happy and appreciative customers.

Congratulations to all our retailers on a fabulous first year and thank you to all who have supported us.

14 April – 10 May 2013

Preview Saturday 13 April 2-5.30pm

How does one capture a landscape, the essence of a place, the images it conjures?

This exhibition features a series of works by Kate Bentley, arising out of a single journey along the Norwegian coast.

This is not an exercise in representation. Most of the places in these paintings don’t exist.

Instead the work attempts to find new ways to touch us and connect us to this remarkable environment.

“Breathe deeply, focus remember who you are, for this landscape has no need of you”.

An extract from a poem by Pauline Yarwood.

To Settle to join the celebrations marking the opening of The Courtyard Dairy, cheese maturer Andy Swinscoe’s fabulous shop. Originally from Appleby-in-Westmorland, Andy learned his trade in France under the watchful eye of Herve Mons, widely regarded as one of the finest cheese affineurs (maturers) in the world.

Cutting the ribbon and singing praises was the elegant and rather beautiful Duchess of Northumberland, and we all tucked into raclette (hot off the grill and served up with a side of spiky pickle by Andy’s dad) and grazed on a stonking goats cheese, Dorstone Hall made by Charlie Westhead at the Neal’s Yard Creamery in Herefordshire, tangy Dale End cheddar, smooth and toothsome Bleu des Causses and my fave, a mellow camembert-alike, Tunworth from Hampshire. All accompanied by Leeds-made crackers!

Produce from all over the country and parts of Europe (not just cheese, there’s a small but interesting range of charcuterie too) is available online. But we’d urge you to visit, the shop is terrific, and there’s nothing like the smell of a good cheese to get the juices flowing ..

I was browsing the cheese section of a busy supermarket trying to put a cheeseboard together for friends when I felt overwhelmed by the choice and didn’t know where to begin. Fortunately I found someone who could help. Andy Swinscoe, Yorkshire’s youngest and probably only cheese refiner who is based at the newly opened Courtyard Dairy, Settle.

Although only 26, Andy has been living and breathing cheese since he left Sheffield Hallam University with a first class honours in Culinary Arts and Hospitality five years ago.

Andy explained that for a good cheeseboard I would need between three and five cheeses.

“Too many and you won’t taste the range. You also need to think about the order in which you taste the cheese,” says Andy.

“A fresh and clean tasting crumbly Wensleydale or a fresh goats cheese like Dorstone is an ideal way to start as it cleans the palate. Then move on to something soft and oozy with a stronger flavour such as Tunworth, the English camembert.

“A hard cheese should follow such as Yorkshire’s very own Dale End Cheddar made in Botton village in the lee of the North York Moors. Blue cheeses should always be tasted last because their strong flavour.”

Andy advises buying 25g of each cheese per person. So you will need between 400g and 500g. You can put together a good, varied board for about £15 and make savings by buying more of the hard cheese which is less expensive.

I also needed some advice on which cheese to use for one of my favourite standby dishes a twice baked soufflé. “A really good cheese to use for that is another beautiful English cheese called Old Winchester” – a cross between Cheddar and nutty flavoured Gouda which has worked perfectly in the recipe below http://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/lifestyle/food-drink/eating-in-or-out/the-big-cheese-on-the-board-1-5383707
